| FAQ How do I choose a producer or a studio? Same way as you'd choose the right shoes. Must be good quality, your style, be priced right, be reliable and fit comfortably... You should certainly be able to hear samples of the work that was done there previously, and hear the overall depth and quality of the recordings and the mixes. And if general atmosphere of the studio is to your liking, most likely you are in the right place. Does the appearance of the studio matter? Absolutely! Appearances speak volumes. Engineering and production requires absolute attention to most minute detail. A way the workspace is kept should tell you something... Does it make a difference if the studio is owner operated? Not always, but it certainly helps... Does it matter if the producer plays an instrument? Not necessarily, however an ability to play instruments certainly makes a producer more valuable… _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ What are you really paying for?.. Gear? Convenience? Location? Maybe!.. However none of those things will yield results unless you have a reliable producer behind the board. What you’re really paying for is the confidence of knowing that your project is in the right hands and that your ideas will become reality. Choose wisely. Aside from asking for a spec sheet and a rate quote, take the time to get to know your producer and to plan your project. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Producion philosophy Matching yourself to a producer you can work with is often a combination of matching philosophies, budget, and personality. Here’s my philosophy on recording and production: Solutions... The very first service I perform for my clients is consulting. This happens during session one, where I spend time listening to your music, ideas, concerns, and ambitions. The goal is to emerge with a tangible plan (e.g. timeline, wish list, tracking order, etc.) before you even take the first step. Machines don’t capture magic, they emulate it... When it comes to recording I believe in practical, calculated recording solutions filled with ways to make machines emulate the magic of the artists’ music. Microphones and processors are not human ears, so instead of fighting the machine, you must remain sympathetic to its imperfections while cracking the whip to harness its full potential. Match the Artist with the right resources… It’s my belief that every project must be matched with the right resourses. Everything must be taken into account – stylistic compatibility, skill, experience, equipment, and setting – in order to feel confident that you are on the right track. Trust your instinct. Without a plan, without the right tools and resources, you might find yourself at the back of the food chain hoping for a lucky break... I embrace luck with open arms, but I don’t count on it...neither should you. |
